Classic not kind to Cougars, again

BY STEVE CANNULI

WENTWORTH - Friday night's championship game of the Reidsville Review Holiday Classic pitted teams with contrasting styles. It was the perimeter, three-point game of Bishop McGuiness against the inside, power game of the Rockingham County Cougars.
In the end, the three-pointers won out as the Villains got a game-high 33 points from sophomore Aaron Toomey and defeated host RCHS, 76-68.
"Size was a factor at every position," said Villains' head coach Josh Thompson. "They were bigger than us and that was our main focus. If we could take care of the defensive boards, not give them second and third chances, we'd have a chance to be in it at the end."
"Against the zone, they shot the lights out and against the man they got way too much dribble penetration," said Rockingham head coach Jeff Hamilton. "They got as many open looks on threes against the man as they did against the zone."
Bishop McGuiness, which defeated McMichael in the opening round, connected on 12 of 26 (46 percent) of its three-point shots. With the win, the Villains improved to 9-4 on the season.
"That's been a strength of ours all season," added Thompson. "Luckily for us they were sitting down for us. If they don't sit down for us, this is a completely different game and Rockingham runs away with this."
The loss dropped the Cougars to 6-3 on the season and it marked the team's third straight championship game defeat in the Reidsville Review Holiday Classic. Last season, RCHS lost to Patrick County.
Toomey, who was awarded the tournament's most valuable player trophy, scored 18 of his 33 after halftime and connected on 11 of 12 free throws during that span.
Also making the all-tournament team from B-M were Zach Toomey and Ross Diachenko along with Rockingham County's Justin Ward and Wantrel 'Buck' Parker.
Parker scored 28 points in the losing effort and Ward chipped in with 19.
Throughout the first half, the Villains struggled against the inside game of the Cougars. Rockingham County, which out rebounded the visitors 31-15 for the game, jumped out to a 20-16 first-quarter lead and extended the four-point lead to six with a 22-20 second-quarter score.
"At times we settled for one pass and an outside side," said Hamilton, whose team was outscored 40-26 after halftime. "We got away from taking the ball inside."
In the first half, the Cougars took it to the Villains and were 17 of 26 (65 percent) from the field. However, in the second half Rockingham's offense began to drift outside and consequently the Cougars were 9 of 25 (36 percent) shooting from the field.
Bishop McGuiness, which trailed by as many as eight in the first half, grabbed a seven-point lead with 4:18 left in the game - following a Toomey three-pointer.
"Aaron is a special player," said Thompson. "He's got great basketball savvy."
The lead remained near seven points through the next two minutes of the fourth quarter before Devin Moyer grabbed a steal and went in for the basket. Moyer's shot missed, but his 1 of 2 free throws cut the gap to 66-62. Moments later, off a Moyer miss, Ward grabbed the offensive rebound and scored the putback - getting the home team within three (67-64).
Rockingham capped off a 10-5 run with a pair of Ward free throws, which made it a 68-66 B-M lead.
However, over the final 1:03 the Villains outscored the Cougars 8-2 via the free throw line. BM connected on 8 of 9 FTs down the stretch.
"When they did get into the lane, we sent them to the line too much," said Hamilton. "We fouled way too much."
In addition to Toomey's play, the Villains also got 25 points from Diachenko, who was 5 of 11 from three-point range. Toomey finished the game making 4 of 6 three-pointers.
The Villains also did a good job of protecting the basketball. While B-M committed just eight turnovers, Rockingham County 12. Six of the Cougars' turnovers came in the fourth period, along with seven missed free throws.
"Free throws have been out Achilles Heel all season long," added Hamilton.
In addition to his 19 points, Ward pulled down a game-high 14 rebounds and had three assists. Parker added 10 rebounds, five coming at the offensive end. Dusty Kenealy, who finished with two points, led the Cougars with four assists.
Steve Nealen was the other Villain in double figures, scoring 11 and Rockingham County also got a 17-point effort from Moyer, who was 2 for 4 from three-point range.
The schedule does not get any easier for RCHS, which hosts Greensboro Dudley on Wednesday night. The Panthers, 9-2, lost to Greensboro Day in the finals of the Little Four tournament Friday night. Last season, the Cougars stunned Dudley in Wentworth.
"Wednesday night, we are going to find out where we stand against the upper tier of the conference," said Hamilton.

Rams take fourth in Danville

By FRED JOHNSON
Special to The Reidsville Review
DANVILLE, Va. - Intensity, passion, desire and execution are what this contest featured. Dan River Jacob Gruse of Dan River and Bill Walton of Reidsville supplied the intensity and passion, but it would be up to their teams to execute and desire to win.
In the end, Reidsville rallied to force overtime and capture fourth place with a 76-72 victory over the Wildcats in the 25th Annual Register and Bee Holiday Shootout.
Coming into the game, Walton knew what his team had to do.
"We need to box out and rebound in order to win," Walton said.
His team did exactly that by outrebounding the Wildcats 10-6 in the first quarter. However, the Wildcats, led by junior guard Darren White, still managed to outscore the Rams 25-13.
Both teams played an up-tempo style, but Dan River gained the upper hand by executing its offense and capitalizing on six Reidsville turnovers.
After a lackadaisical first quarter, it looked as though Dan River was poised to hand the Rams their fifth loss of the season. But Reidsville (3-4) switched to a 2-3 zone and forced Dan River to shoot from the perimeter. The Rams executed the zone to perfection as Dan River got impatient and tossed up a few ill-advised shots and committed seven costly turnovers.
White, who scored 24 points, maintained his composure enough however to score 10 of Dan River's 14 points in the quarter. Yet, the Rams outscored the Wildcats 19-14 in the awxons, and shaved the Wildcats' lead to 39-32.
But the tide turned at the start of the second half. Dan River committed two turnovers to start the third quarter and Gruse found himself forced to call a quick 30-second timeout. Although the Wildcats would eventually settle down, execute their offensive sets and lead 56-47, Reidsville had gained precious momentum and started to wear down the Wildcats.
Reidsville outscored Dan River 19-10 in the fourth quarter behind seven points from Greg Black and Darius Martin. Reidsville sank only three 3-pointers the entire game, but they came at the right time as the Rams mounted their comeback.
With 1:40 left to play in the game Dan River's DaRell Adams got an assist from Markcus Foster for a thunderous dunk.
Icing on the cake right? Wrong.
With 32 seconds remaining, Dan River committed the first of four turnovers in the quarter, which led to an easy lay up by Black. That cut the Wildcats' lead to 66-63 with only 19 seconds left. Dan River committed another turnover on an errant pass, but Reidsville gave the ball right back with a turnover of their own. Down by three and time running out, Reidsville was forced to foul Dan River's D'Antony Dickerson, who missed the front end of a free throw opportunity.
Reidsville rebounded the miss shot and advanced the up the court to Black, who nailed a 3-pointer that tied the game at 66-66, sending the contest into overtime.
Reidsville dominated the extra period, outscoring their opponents 10-6. The Wildcats' free throw woes continued, as Dan River converted on only 3-of-5 free throws while Reidsville connected on 4-of-5.
Black led the Rams in scoring with 16 points, while Tyrell Houghton added 12 and Darius Martin with 13. The Rams' Devante Scarver bounced back from an injury yesterday and had a solid outing with eight points.

Lady Cougars win second straight Classic title

By STEVE CANNULI

WENWORTH – For the second straight time, Rockingham County and Reidsville played an overtime basketball game and for the second time it was the Lady Cougars who came out on the winning end.
Tied 52-52 at the end of regulation, Elizabeth Ferguson (4) and Kylie Keck (3) combined for seven points as RCHS outscored Reidsville 11-4 in the extra session and won, 63-56 in the championship game of the 2007 Reidsville Review Holiday Classic.
“We didn’t always play smart, but I think we kept our pose,” said Rockingham head coach Woody Wall.
“The girls realized the challenge and stepped up,” said Reidsville head coach Casey Elrod. “They are learning to play within their means and becoming a more efficient team.”
After nearly two minutes of scoreless basketball, Rockingham took the early overtime lead thanks to a Lindsey Puckett lay up at the 2:32 mark.
The Lady Cougars extended their lead to four when Ferguson connected with Ashley Palm at 1:42.
Reidsville’s first chance at a score fell by the wayside with a pair of missed free throws.
With 1:04 left in the game, Krystal Moore found a wide open Ferguson for an easy lay up and a 58-52 advantage.
The Lady Rams finally got on the scoreboard when Brady Roach buried a field goal with just under a minute left in overtime.
RCHS outscored Reidsville 5-2 over the final 40 seconds and took home its second straight Classic championship.
All five of the Lady Cougars’ starters – Palm, Moore, Ferguson, Keck and Puckett – finished in double figures, led by Palm’s 12. Puckett added 11 and Moore, Ferguson, Keck and Jessica Lowe all chipped in with 10 points each.
Reidsville got a game-high 14 points from Kiana Galloway and 13 from Eleisha Hairston.
Moore won most valuable player honors for the third straight year. In the finals, Moore also had four assists and four steals.
Joining Moore on the all-tournament team by teammates Palm and Puckett and Reidsville’s Melita Galloway and Hairston.
The Lady Cougars won despite trailing 27-23 at halftime.
Reidsville took a 14-10 first-quarter lead – led by Galloway’s five points and Hairston’s four.
As the second quarter began, the Lady Rams’ strong play continued thanks in large part to their rebounding. Of the 9 second-quarter rebounds, five came on the offensive end. Six different Reidsville players got into the rebounding act in the second.
RHS out rebounded Rockingham 9-5 before halftime.
Palm led the Lady Cougars’ charge with eight points and three assists at the half.
Rockingham County got back into the lead by outscoring Reidsville 13-7 in the third period. RCHS tied the game at 30-30 when Moore stole a Reidsville pass and scored a three-point play. The game remained tied (34-34) at the 2:36 mark.
“We should have had Palm in foul trouble earlier and we can’t have Lei Lei [Hairston] on the bench for that long,” added Elrod, who had to sit his center throughout the third period.
With 1:04 left in the third, Keck connected on two FTs and RCHS had a 35-34 lead.
At quarter’s end, Reidsville managed just seven points, six on three-pointers from Melita Galloway and Kiana Galloway.
Rockingham County remained unbeaten at 10-0 for the first time since the 2002-03 season. Reidsville dropped to 4-5 with the loss.
“Reidsville’s record is very deceiving. They are not a bad ball team,” said Wall. “They are a hard match up for us because Galloway can hit three pointers from 30 feet out.
We play a good zone, but not that far out. If we loosen the zone up, that leaves Hairston open in the middle.”
“That’s the best part about this match up is that we’re playing a disciplined team that’s well coached and we know this is preparing us for the conference season,” said Elrod.
The Lady Cougars return to action on Wednesday with their Triad 3-A opener against 3-A power Greensboro Dudley. Reidsville also returns this week with a stern task – playing at Grimsley on Friday. Grimsley won the first meeting.
“We’ve played the first two segments of the season 10-0 and now it’s on to the conference part of the schedule,” added Wall.

Eagles humble Panthers in Shootout finals

Staff Report
DANVILLE, Va. — George Washington continued its dominance at the Danville Register and Bee Holiday Shootout. For the 17th time and 12 out of the last 13 years, the Eagles have won the Shootout.
Powered by a strong first half, G.W. raced past the Morehead Panthers, 92-63 in Saturday night’s championship game at Averett University.
Despite outscoring the Eagles 21-18 in the third quarter, Morehead could not overcome its first-half deficit and George Washington closed out the game by outscoring the visitors 27-17.
G.W.’s Nick Barbour, who finished with a game-high 27 points, was named the tournament’s most valuable player. He averaged 25 points per game in the three-day event. He was joined on the all-tournament team by teammate Terrance Townes, who finished with 21 points.
Morehead’s KaShaun Johnson was named all-tournament, scoring 16 points — 12 after halftime — in the loss.
The Panthers fell behind 23-11 at the end of one quarter of play and the Panthers’ woes continued in the second quarter.
Justin Goggin’s buzzer-beater put back helped the Panthers to their 21-18 third-quarter run and had the visitors within 19 at 65-46.
The Panthers could not overcome the inside game of the Eagles, who sealed the victory with a strong fourth period.
Barbour scored 10 of his 27 in the fourth and 15 after halftime.
George Washington, which out rebounded Morehead 20-14 through the first two quarters, scored 26 of its first 47 points inside the paint. At the half, the Eagles’ high percentage shooting was good for a 20 of 33 field goal percentage (61 percent). G.W. made 9 of its first 14 field goals.
Conversely, Morehead was just 11 of 30 (37 percent) from the field at the half.
The Eagles led 47-25 at halftime, thanks to a 24-14 burst in the second.
G.W. raced out to a 7-2 lead, but the Panthers roared back and got within three (12-9) — following an Adam Hairston put back basket. The Eagles ended the quarter with an 11-2 run and the Panthers found themselves down 12 early on.
Leading 25-15, George Washington put together another run — midway through the second quarter — that allowed the Eagles to grab a 24-point cushion (45-21). A 20-6 run over a 5:00 span did in the Panthers.
Terrance Townes scored 15 points and had three rebounds in the first half and Nick Barbour chipped in with 12.
At halftime, Morehead was led by Hairston’s eight points and five rebounds and six points from Greg Perkins.
With the win, the Eagles improved to 11-0, while the Panthers dropped to 5-4.

The Reidsville Review Holiday Classic day two

The Reidsville Review Holiday Classic day one

McMichael takes third at Reidsville Review Holiday Classic

By BRETT KNIGHT
Staff Writer
WENTWORTH — McMichael certainly got a wake up call from underdog Community Baptist in the first half Friday night’s third-place game of the Reidsville Review Holiday Classic, which was held at Rockingham County High School. The Phoenix held off the pesky Conquerors to take only a nine-point lead into halftime, but came out a different team in the second half. DMHS used runs of 13-2 and 14-0 after halftime, limited Community Baptist to only three field goals and eventually coasted to a 60-33 victory.
With the win, McMichael improved its record to 3-9 heading into the New Year. The Phoenix, which lost 61-48 to Bishop McGuiness in Thursday’s opening round, came out a little flat as head coach Randel Galloway put in five new faces just 2:25 into the game.
“Maybe with the loss on Thursday, we were a little disappointed coming into this game,” said Galloway. “We even had a change in the starting lineup, but that didn’t seem to help things at the beginning. I went with five new guys to see if we could get some energy on the court.”
It apparently worked as McMichael saw a two-point deficit (4-2) turn into a six-point lead at the start of the second quarter. DMHS used a 7-0 run in the opening quarter to take a 14-8 lead thanks to the likes of Josh Hayes, Chris Parker and Adam Redden. A Redden put back with 1:15 left in the first made it 13-8 in favor of DMHS.
However, McMichael still had its hands full with Community Baptist, which played all five starters the en-tire 32 minutes. Leading the way for the Conquerors in the first half was Jarod Childrey, who scored 12 of the team’s 23 points on 3 of 5 shooting from the field and 6 of 7 from the free throw line.
Terrell King led the Phoenix in scoring with a game-high 14 points to go along with three steals. Redden chipped in with eight points and a game-high 12 rebounds, while Doss added seven points and seven rebounds. Ryan Loftly was key on defense with five steals.
Jarod Childrey finished with a team-high 12 points for Community, while A.J. Brower also reached double figures with 10. The Conquerors were also outrebounded 40-16.
McMichael will return to action next Wednesday with a home non-conference game with Magna Vista.
